The Wildlife
Reserve of Cuyabeno (603,000 hectares) is a mixture of flooded
forest including 13 lagoons located on the Ecuadorian-Peruvian
border. Access from Coca is the Napo River to the Aguarico
River or from Lago Agrio to the Aguarico River. Much of the
tour is along the lagoons (lakes) although there are also trails
in the forest.
Over 500 species
of birds are registered here including the Gray-winged
Trumpeter, Pheasant Cuckoo, Zigzag Heron, Salvin’s Curassow,
Cocha Antshrike, Pavonine Quetzal, many species of professional
antbirds and the Pheasant Cuckoo. There are also Amazon River
Dolphins, Gray Dolphins, over 8 species of primates, anaconda,
manatee, Giant River Otters and a number of other species of
wildlife in this amazing area.
A mixture of
Kichwa, Cofan and Siona-Secoya indigenous peoples live inside
the reserve. This is an excellent trip for those that have an
affiliation with dolphins and enjoy exploring lakes with plenty
of time for paddling or motoring the reserve.
Options for
accommodations: camping or sleeping at the home of an indigenous
family. Lodge accommodations with private bath are available at
additional expense.
